Learn woodworking for free + 1 year’s membership to the Edinburgh Tool Library

Learn DIY and woodworking skills from a professional crafts person, grow your confidence, and make something useful for the community

This group is for people of all genders aged 16-24

Location:
Edinburgh Tool Library, Leith Community Workshop and Learning Space + various community locations

Time: 10:00am – 1:00pm (3 hours)

Minimum Commitment: 3 weeks

Group size: 4


What To Expect

The group will meet for 3 hours each week for 3 weeks. At the end of 3 weeks you have the option to leave the group, or sign up for another 3 week block. All of the available dates are listed below.

During this time you will make useful wooden objects for yourself and for the local community.

The group will be led by a professional woodworker, who will teach you all of the technical skills you need to create something beautiful useful.

This group is particularly useful if you:

  • Need a bit of extra experience to add to their CV
  • Trying to figure out what to do for a career
  • Want to develop confidence in a workshop
  • Have found it off putting or difficult to get into woodworking
  • Can commit to coming for 3 weeks in a row

Each block will provide you with experiences of:

  • Using large format workshop tools
  • Using hand tools
  • Making small wooden objects
  • Building a useful object for the community

Previous groups have

🪚 Made a stool

🌿 Built a planter for a community garden

🔨 Learned how to hang a shelf

🪵 Visited a timber yard

🛠️ This is a small and welcoming group for people aged 16-24 of all genders


Available to Join

  • Join one block or as many as you like
  • But we do ask that folk commit to coming for the full block (3 weeks)

20th October, 22nd October, 3rd November

10th November, 17th November, 24th November

  • Use practical skills help local communities and the natural environment
  • Manage and develop your own learning
  • Work independently and safely

  • A structured learning programme
  • Opportunity to build on skills and interests you already have as well as learn new things
  • Tuition and Mentorship from a professional craftspeople
  • Access tools and Workshop Space
  • All materials
  • Small group peer learning environment (up to 4 people) 
  • Connection to professional makers from a diverse range of backgrounds, working in various contexts
  • 1 year free membership to Edinburgh Tool Library
  • Snacks and drinks

James King is the workshop manager at The Edinburgh Tool Library. He has supported 5 groups through the Tools for Life Programme.

James also works as a specialist technician at the College of Art and Design at The University of Edinburgh.
