If you’ve borrowed a tool or used our open workshop sessions, you’ve probably met one of our volunteers.
We have over 40 incredible people who help make the Tool Library possible.
Want to get involved? You don’t have to know everything, you just have to want to dedicate some of your time to the ETL community because you love being a part of it!
Below is a list of the types of volunteering it takes to see our project become a reality. The application form is right at the bottom of this page ⬇️
Tool Library – always wanted
Tool librarians interact with members at the front desk, helping with tool check outs, renewals, membership sign up and questions and also online via our database preparing and confirming tool reservations. We strive to create an inclusive space that is welcoming to people of all backgrounds and skill levels. No need to have experience with tools, but you should be passionate about our mission and values. We also have lots of tools (as you can expect), so there are a few regular “backstage” shifts to catalogue, organise and maintain our inventory. Shifts are three to four hours. Minimum of three (or more) shifts per month during operating hours: Wednesdays 1.30-4.30pm and 5-8pm, Fridays 1.30-4.30pm and Saturdays 10am-1.30pm in Leith and Thursdays 5-8pm, Fridays 1.30-4.30pm and Saturdays 11am-2pm in Portobello.
Events and fundraising – most wanted
We occasionally require help representing ETL at local events such as maker fairs, which we attend to promote our organisation, mission, and services. Duties vary, but include speaking with many different strangers about ETL, setting up and breaking down a table and display, signing up new members and teaching/moderating small activities or workshops. You could also help plan or participate in fund-raising events, like stand up comedy nights, members talks, mad challenges, etc. We’re looking to recruit a 4-6 volunteers to set up a committee dedicated to meet once a month to programme and make plans ahead of fairs and events. This is a great way to get fully involved in our local community and the exciting opportunities it offers.
Tool Repair & Maintenance
Here at ETL we know better than most that the work and effort that goes on behind the curtains is just as important as the work that the outside world sees. We are looking for some enthusiastic volunteers to help us carry out the essential task of maintaining and repairing our tools and getting our amazing donations ready for the limelight! Shifts are two to three hours. Minimum of three (or more) shifts per month during operating hours: Wednesdays 1.30-4.30pm and 5-8pm, Fridays 1.30-4.30pm in Leith and Thursdays 5-8pm, Fridays 1.30-4.30pm, Saturdays 11am-2pm in Portobello.
We hold open member sessions every week where people can come to make, repair and learn new skills. Workshop volunteers are here to create a welcoming and inclusive environment while making sure everyone is safe and supported. We are looking for people who have hands-on experience with all of our equipment, which includes the planer, chop saw, table saw, router table, etc, or who are extremely keen to learn! Shifts are three hours. Minimum of three (or more) shifts per month during operating hours: Tuesdays 5-8pm and Saturdays 2pm-5pm in Leith and Thursdays 5-8pm and Saturdays 11am-2pm in Portobello. This role requires significant expertise.
Social Media & Blogs
The members and volunteers at ETL do great things! We want the world to know about everyone’s achievements and this is a key part in inspiring others to join the sharing revolution and do the same. We’re looking for volunteers with a passion for storytelling, writing and sharing to post two blogs a month on how the ETL community is progressing and on the successes and stories which are made here. This is a totally variable time commitment, and much can be done from home.
